Class Description:
My name is Autumne Lowe and I teach the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) at West Henderson High School. The OCS program was created to serve students with disabilities who intend to enter the workforce upon graduation from high school. While we participate in a rigorous academic curriculum, our main focus is to prepare students to be effective employees with strong work ethic and a solid foundation of work skills. Over their four years in high school, our students’ preparation includes classes on career exploration and planning, job searching, interviewing, dressing for work, resume building, communication skills, appropriate workplace behavior, and much more; supervised work experience on campus; internships in the community; and eventually, paid employment in the community. Our students graduate the program with a high school diploma, 900 hours of work experience, and the skills to obtain and maintain gainful employment.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
While our program covers a very broad scope of academic and work-related skills, we are required to do so with an extremely limited budget. The funds we are allotted are needed for classroom essentials such as paper, pencils, binders, and other materials that many of our students’ families are unable to afford. We do not have the funds to purchase equally important, but much more expensive items such as classroom furniture, technological devices, individual curriculum workbooks, etc.
My Philosophy:
My teaching philosophy is based on the needs of the individual student. Once I get to know a student's needs, I develop a purpose that guides my instruction and interaction with that student. With some of my students, my purpose is to help them excel academically, while with others, my sole purpose is to give them a safe, loving environment in which to escape the chaos they experience in their lives outside of school. My philosophy is to meet students where they are and give them what they need in that moment.

About Me:
I grew up in Hendersonville, NC, and graduated from West Henderson High School, the school where I currently teach. Upon graduation, I joined the Army and spent 5 years serving as a Korean linguist. I lived in South Carolina, California, Texas, Hawaii, and Korea during that time. I earned my BA in history while still in the service, and began my Master of Education upon discharge. Once I finished my M.Ed., I decided to go to NC State University to study for a second masters degree in agricultural extension. I began courses for my teaching certificate at Western Carolina University in 2009. Upon earning my certificate, I got a job teaching special education at two elementary schools in Henderson County. I taught at those schools for two years and was hired for my current position in 2013. I couldn't be happier with my students, colleagues, program, and administration. I have finally found my dream job!

I also have a miniature horse, Little Bit, a miniature donkey, Henry, a Great Pyrenees, Coconut, and a bloodhound, Copper. When I am not busy with Lucky or the animals, I like to read, play guitar, sing, and garden.
