Hillside Elementary School
Hometown:
El Paso, TX
Class Information:
Room Number: P 238
Students per Class: 45
Class Description:
5th grade beginning orchestra. I teach the studenta how to play violin, viola, cello, or double bass. I also have a couple of hard of hearing students mainstreamed into my class.
Position:
Orchestra Teacher
Needs:
I would love to have a smart board in my room to show the students how to compose music, picutres of instruments from around the world and information about composers. Every year I have at least one hard of hearing student in my class. This year I have two, one of which is also autistic. There is a fabulous device that plays CD's and can slow down the music with out disturbing the pitch. Our method book contains a CD that plays an accompaniment for each exercise we learn. Sometimes the speed is just too fast; this device would help all the students to participate. Along, with the device it would be great to have a cube speaker to go with it. I have included the type and model below. The CD device is made by: Tascam CD player (CDVT-2). There is an amp/speaker made by Roland: Roland Cube AMP.
My Philosophy:
I believe that music helps children build their confidence. Learning to play an instrument and becoming proficient at it can transfer to academic areas. All children can learn music. I have had resource students who excell in orchestra and hard of hearing students that learn to love playing and instrument. Music can open doors in students minds that many others struggle to find. It builds confidence, students learn to be cooperative and supportive of each other. It helps to define who we are as people.

Why Do I Teach?:
I love to see the students when they are learning how to play. These children are our future, they need to know how important it is to have fine arts in our lives. I want to be sure that each child has a chance to succeed at something, not everyone is going to be a math whiz, or a reading whiz, maybe they next Mozart is is my class?
