Castle Rock Middle School
Hometown:
Billings Montana
Class Information:
Room Number: 517
Students per Class: about 125 each semester
Class Description:
My classroom has four cloned computers and two laptops. We use them for artist exploration and for creating digital art. It is hard to schedule time in the computer lab so many of our projects are on a rotational basis - some of the class is doing a traditional hands on project while they wait their turn for computer time. (i.e. watercolor pencil mandalas at their seats while waiting a turn to use a digital self portrait to create a Publisher computer mandala)
Position:
Art / World of Work
Needs:
Cameras, flip video type devices and other ways to record what students see AND the hardware to download and share their finds. Our current pod of 4 computers (with district mandated Deep Freeze) does not allow us to use USB devices as it resets at each shutdown . Currently I have to download all the cameras on my computer and save to folders on the server for them to access. Also, the two drawing tablets can only be used on the laptops due to the same USB incompatibility issue.
My Philosophy:
I want my students to become aware of art outside of our classroom and in places other than the designated 47 minute periods. We have a blog with extra credit opportunities for photo taking and visiting galleries and museums. We have a webpage for showcasing their completed projects.

Employment History:
I have worked in "education" since my first volunteer job at the public library in Ellensburg while I was in high school. The experiences has varied as we moved - University Library reserve room, cataloging for a multi-library system in Oregon, substitute teaching in a co-op kindergarten in Miami Florida, teaching in my own classroom at a pre-school, coaching high school recreational soccer, high school and middle school libraries, technology integration, and now middle school art.
Why Do I Teach?:
My education has come full circle. My Dad taught Junior High Art from the mid 50's to the 70's. I have been a librarian and technology integration specialist. When the positions kept being cut in our district I was eventually assigned to teach art at the middle school. I'm home....
