MacDowell Elementary School

Detroit
Class Information:
Room Number: 114
Students per Class: 20
Class Description:
I teach Kindergarten in an inner city school. The majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch, making it a title one and "at risk" school. I have 20 students in my classroom whom come to school eager and ready to learn everyday.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
My students are in need of technology in the classroom that is readily available for them to use. Such as computers, cameras, camcorders, etc. Because children today are so inundated with visual and audio technology (television, video games, computers, cell phones, and radio) they seem to grasp learning concepts when these technologies are integrated in the classroom. Unfortunately, many of these luxuries are not available in my school. Research has proven that our children spend a vast amount of their waking hours using these technologies in some way. Therefore, I want to empower my students continued use of these resources, but to use them in a way that can help them to be successful in a learning environment.
My Philosophy:
My students face many challenges and I am convinced that no matter the challenge they are all capable of learning. However, many of my students learn differently. My classroom embraces a variety of learning styles. In order for me to address the many different styles, I have moved beyond traditional education. Our students come to us with little or no exposure to technology and because we live in a technological society, it is important that they are given the opportunity to be able to operate different types of technology, such as computers, cameras, printers, camcorders, etc. My philosophy is to find a way that will allow my students to keep up with our changing world.
