Finney Co Cmty Learning Center
Hometown:
Garden City, KS
Class Information:
Room Number: 7
Students per Class: 80-100
Class Description:
The Finney County Community Learning Center, better known as the New Outlook Academy, is the alternative setting for Garden City High School in Garden City, KS. We average between 80 and 100 students, and have 4 full time teachers, one para that manages our computer lab where students take classes on E2020, a program that offers online courses, as well as 4 part-time teachers that are shared with other schools who offer elective classes for our students. A student who graduates from this school receives a Garden City High School diploma. Our school is based on the principles of the Discovery program, which stresses responsibility, respect, dignity, and integrity. Our goal as a school is to produce students who are responsible citizens, and prepare them for whatever the next step of their life may be. 100% of our students are considered at-risk for one reason or another, and the teachers at the school utilize a variety of teaching methods to help all of our students succeed.
Position:
Math Teacher
Needs:
Our school has a very low budget, but our students would greatly benefit from more technology in our classrooms. Our biggest need right now is laptops for student. The student population at our school has nearly doubled in the last 2 years, but the staff has not increased. In order to keep class sizes reasonable, much more demand has been placed on our online classes, so the teachers do not have the use of computers when needed for class activities. This has also placed a lot of stress on the staff when state assessments come around, as we really do not have the computers necessary to administer the tests.
My Philosophy:
I teach for the students - 100%. I do whatever I can to help my students succeed in math, and in life. I am a firm believer that "stand and deliver" is not an approach to teaching that works with the students in today's society, and my goal is to use other methods that will get students involved in their learning. I chose to transfer to the alternative school because I saw those students as the ones that I could have the most impact on. Even though they are typically more difficult to teach, it is also much more rewarding. I believe that in order to succeed, students must be challenged to think on their own and be presented with multiple ways to learn and be assessed. I was lucky enough to find a staff and administrator that agreed with my philosophy.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am 26 years old, and I am in my 4th year of teaching. I spent 3 years teaching math at Garden City High School in Garden City, KS, where I taught everything from Algebra I to Honors Algebra II. I was one of three teachers that planned and implemented a class to prepare students for the Kansas Math Assessment who were lacking necessary skills, and that class has been an overwhelming success. After 3 years, I transferred to Garden City High School's alternative setting, the New Outlook Academy, where I teach all math classes, as well as organize our online classes.
College and Degrees:
Emporia State Universtiy, Emporia, KS -- BSE Newman University, Wichita, KS -- ESL Endorsement
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I genuinely want to help the kids! There is nothing more satisfying than the look on a student's face when they understand something that they didn't think they were going to be able to do.
