Heppner High School
Hometown:
Pendleton
Class Information:
Room Number: 3
Students per Class: 60
Class Description:
I work with an energetic group of seventh and eight grade students in a 7-12 grade setting. It is a small school in rural Oregon, surrounded by wheat fields.
Position:
Social Studies/L.A. teacher
Needs:
Due to our rural setting it can be difficult to take students on field trips. I would love the ability to use more technology to help fill this gap. Through the use of laptops I would like to start a digital field trip program.
My Philosophy:
Even though my students are eager to have new learning experiences, many of them have not been far from home. My goal is to open up the outside world to them and help them find their role in our global community.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I grew up only about an hour from where I now teach and live. After graduate school my husband and I decided that we would like to return to our local community to raise our own family and give back to a place that has given us so much. Luckily, I had many opportunities growing up to travel and experience the world. I now enjoy sharing my experiences with my students and inspiring them to go out and discover the world around them.
College and Degrees:
I had a great time going to Oregon State University for my bachelor’s degree in liberal studies. While I was there I fell in love with anthropology and try to bring that passion into my classroom. I attended Willamette University for my master's in education. I gained so much insight from my professors and fellow students that I try to implement everyday.
Activities:
I love to travel whenever I can, to wherever I can! Currently I have been busy fixing up our 100 year old home. Also, I enjoy watercolor painting and card making.
Favorite Books:
I really enjoy Modernist writers. My favorite book is, "The Age of Innocents," by Edith Wharton. My favorite book to read with my students is "The Giver," by Lois Lowery.
Favorite Quotes:
"There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." ~ Edith Wharton
Interests:
~ history of 18th century Europe, antique radios and record players, photography (especially of my dogs), learning how to grow a productive garden, shopping at the farmer's market for all the produce my garden won't grow, collecting antique books, fishing with my mom, spending as much time as I can with my husband.
Employment History:
This is my first year as a full fledged teacher! I spent many years volunteering at local schools while in college and taught for Head Start while working of my master's.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I want to share with my students all the possibilites and experiances that are available to them, no matter who they are.
