Class Information:
Room Number: 1
Students per Class: 50
Class Description:
This is an Opportunity Class (OC). Students are placed in this class because they have had some type of problem and are at serious risk of dropping out. The class is predominately Hispanic and English is usually a second language. Many students are juvenile probationers and/or foster children. Some students come from single parent homes with the absent parent being incarcerated. Gang pressure is a daily consideration. Approximately 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our OC students have very little exposure to science or technology. Although I teach math, I am very interested in exposing my students to subjects and experiences that will help to make them more competitive in the real world. This would include incorporating general science, chemistry and physics into my math instruction. I want to introduce the students to possible career paths. The goal is to move them out of middle school with some ideas on what they might like to try out in high school.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
We have very little in the way of math, technology or science resources. We need basic science lab equipment, some updated technology such as a flip video to record experiments. We could use a color printer and a camera so that we can share our activities with parents and the community. Any classroom resources would add another dimension to the depth of instruction that I am able to provide my students and would be greatly appreciated.
My Philosophy:
It is amazing to see that spark light in a child's eye when they realize that they can be successful and that someone believes in them. When they realize that they are not on this journey alone. Every child is valuable and deserves an education.
