Geneseo Central School
Hometown:
Rochester, NY
Class Information:
Room Number: C24
Students per Class: About 20
Class Description:
I am an academic interventionist in English Language Arts. While working with a caseload of students, I pull out small groups for reading intervention and push in to classrooms to support the teacher in reading and writing related activities.
Position:
Academic Intervention Reading Teacher
Needs:
Our students enter school with a wide range of abilities and needs. The exposure to early literacy practices in the home are vastly different from one family to another. As a result, some students have difficulty delving into literacy practices.
My Philosophy:
I believe that all students have the ability and the motivation to learn if we find the right path to light a spark within them.
Personal Information:
About Me:
My name is Jillian. I am a literacy specialist with 6 years experience in various schools around the Rochester area. I am an avid traveler and enjoy exploring new places and relaying my experiences back to my students.
College and Degrees:
I studied childhood and special education at Niagara University where I earned a Bachelor's degree. I then obtained my master's degree in literacy from Nazareth College.
Activities:
When I am not teaching, I enjoy doing yoga, swimming, and reading (of course!)
Favorite Books:
For fun, I enjoy reading memoirs and collections of essays. One of my favorite books is The Book Thief. I love books that stir up emotion and imagery.
Favorite Quotes:
"There is a crack in everything, That's how the light gets in" Leonard Cohen I like this quote because I think it reminds us of hope even when we don't think there can be. I think this is an important feeling to instill in our students.
Interests:
Other than my interests in yoga, swimming, and reading which I've mentioned, I'm also getting into photography and capturing pictures of places I've been.
Employment History:
I am going in to my fourth year at Geneseo. I spent my first two years as a reading teacher and then spent this past year as a first grade teacher. I loved it, but had a desire to go back to being an interventionist and working with my small groups of struggling readers.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I love guiding students toward unmasking the mystery behind the symbols of letters and their connections to sounds and words. I love seeing them reach moments of success in their journey to become readers and writers.
