The Scholars' Academy
Hometown:
Floral Park New York
Class Information:
Room Number: 201
Students per Class: 96 (3 classes)
Class Description:
I teach three classes of 32 math students. Technology is a part of almost all activities, yet the lack of hardware can hold us back. Our students work collaboratively in groups and constantly share their thinking and ideas.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
The biggest need is laptops. We also need digital cameras and nano's (or some form of recording device). Another LCD projector and a document reader would be great.
My Philosophy:
Learn by doing. Take time and place out of learning. Students should learn using hands on activities and work collaboratively. Then, if we record this happening digitally students can view and learn from this material when they are not in the classroom. The internet (when used properly) is a magnificent resource that should be incorporated into all lessons.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a dad. my son is seven. I am from Ireland. I have lived in NYC for 12 years. I love learning and having a laugh in the process. I am currently obsessed with how great technology currently is. This is my 12th year teaching.
College and Degrees:
I went to Queens University in Belfast. I majored in Education. I have a BEd Honors Degree in Education. I am also finished with a masters in Special Education.
Activities:
I play chess, run (not as often as I would like), and am quite a good painter. I now enjoy exploring with I-Movie, I-Photo, and adding to my I-Tune playlists. I am away too attached to my MacBook Pro.
Favorite Books:
Tuesday's with Morrie and any autobiography.
Favorite Quotes:
Less is more.
Interests:
Technology and everything Apple produces. Running, playing chess, painting, and educational research.
Employment History:
An elementary school in Ireland for 1yr, Catholic school in Nyc for 4yrs, and 6yrs in the NYC Board of Education. All as a teacher.
Why Do I Teach?:
Teaching has always been my calling. I really enjoy working with students and I always love learning. As a student I don't like boredom and wasting time. As a teacher I strive for boredom to have no place in my classes, and I think technology is a big part of the solution.
