Class Information:
Students per Class: 55
Class Description:
I teach 3rd grade in Mississippi. Currently, I teach three classes. All of our classes are leveled through a flexible grouping program designed to meet students needs. My course load includes Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, & Social Studies. I teach approximately 55 students throughout the day. Most classes consist of 16-20 students.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Our most urgent need is an iPad. This versatile product will be used to meet a variety of needs in my classroom. The first use involves a safety issue. Currently, my third grade students and I are tripping over cords to use our interactive whiteboard. This product will allow my students and myself control over our whiteboard from anywhere in the classroom. Additionally, the apps would allow me to use this product for learning centers, interactive learning, and networking (we have plans to Skype with another third grade class to collaborate on a novel study). This product will also be used to keep track of student assessment data which will allow me to differentiate learning to better meet the needs of my students.
My Philosophy:
During my graduate studies (Brain Research- BrainSmart Teaching & Learning; I currently hold a Specialist Degree), one quote truly resonated with me. “Never question ability, always question strategies”, (Conyers & Wilson). I believe that all students have an untapped wealth of learning potential. My job is to tailor instruction to help these students access this potential and harness it to gain academic success. This includes thinking outside the box and using innovative strategies to help learners that may have struggled with traditional methods of teaching. One of the best opportunities for this forward thinking approach is the effective use of technology. When used effectively, technology can truly level the playing field for students. In addition, it allows educators to inspire innovators through everyday classroom practices. Our world is changing at a rapid pace. Keeping up with these changes requires educators to develop innovative and challenging lessons that help students prepare for a working environment that we have not even imagined!
Personal Information:
About Me:
I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I have been teaching for 11 years. My favorite grade is third grade. This year I have been blessed with the opportunity to return to this grade level. Third graders are naturally inquisitive. Most thirst for knowledge with a zeal that unfortunately disappears as many students get older.
College and Degrees:
I have a Masters & Specialist Degree in BrainSmart: Teaching & Learning. My graduate studies have given me an in dept knowledge base of how brain research can transform our schools and learning environments. Most of this research has occurred in the last 10-15 years. I am excited to be a pioneer in this sweeping change. As more knowledge is learned about how the brain works and how people learn, teaching strategies and theories have been infused with a knowledge base that encourages innovation and individualized instructional practices. In my classroom, this knowledge allows me to tailor instruction to my students needs while infusing innovative teaching strategies designed to help my students reach their maximum learning potential!
Activities:
I love to read! Spending time with friends and family is my favorite way to spend down time.
Favorite Books:
Oh the Places You'll Go, Harry Potter Series, and The Phantom Tollbooth.
Favorite Quotes:
Never question ability, always question strategies!
Interests:
I love to travel. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to travel abroad in the near future. I would love to explore Europe!
Employment History:
I began my career teaching 3rd grade in South Mississippi. With four years under my belt, I was bitten by the travel bug. I moved to South Carolina, where I taught 4th grade. The next stop was Georgia where I taught 3rd Grade and Pre-K. In 2009, I moved back home to Mississippi where I taught 4th grade and recently moved back down to 3rd Grade.
