Chisholm Middle School
Hometown:
Newton
Class Information:
Room Number: 14
Students per Class: 130
Class Description:
Middle school art is an elective class for 6th , 7th and 8th graders. Students engage in hands on learning, independent projects and are exposed to a full range of studio experiences throughout their middle school art classes. I also teach yearbook outside of the school day. these select students are responsible for creating and editing an 80 page full color yearbook for the student body, handed out on the last day of school.
Position:
Art Teacher
Needs:
Better cameras are needed for good images. The point and shoot cameras we have now are old and slow. Most images are grainy or out of focus. Students do not feel successful when taking pictures with these cameras. Currently most of the picture taking happens with the yearbook students. I would like to be able to allow art students to work with the cameras on a regular basis, creating new artwork as well as developing their own digital portfolio of artwork created during their middle school years.

"Every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once he grow up" Pablo Picasso
Interests:
Along with creating artwork with students I enjoy gardening, creating art with my young boys and playing with my dog. This year we have added a flock of chickens to our family, right now they are pets for the boys, I am looking forward to eggs soon!
Employment History:
I started teaching in the elementary level. I took two years off from public school to volunteer/coordinateat an inner city afterschool program. The last four years I have been teaching at the middle school level.
Why Do I Teach?:
The benifit of teaching art is that I have the flexiblity and freedom to allow students space. Even the most difficult behavior students find space and place in my room. I teach so that I can create those moments of peace for all students to create, imagine and expand their worlds. I enjoy working with students in small groups, seeing their "aha" moments and excitement that comes with mastering a skill. I teach because I am a parent. I know how much our world will depend on this next generation and I want to help equip them to handle what comes their way.
