Mervin Iverson Elementary
Hometown:
Born and raised in Vegas!
Class Information:
Room Number: 42
Students per Class: 18
Class Description:
I have a wonderful class of first graders. They are bright, thoughtful learners who enjoy each new thing they are taught. Quite a few of my students qualify for free lunch, meaning that they are on the low end socioeconomically. They don't have technology available to them in their homes. That's why at school, it's all the more important to expose them to the wonders that educational technology can provide them.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Language, math, and science software with a K-2 focus is badly needed in my particular school. So many of the programs seem to be geared toward the intermediate grades. I'd be so pleased to be considered for any of the items on my wish list.
Personal Information:

Activities:
I love to sing and scrapbook, but my favorite times are watching my kids as they perform in choirs, dance groups, and sports teams.
Favorite Books:
I love a good mystery, especially anything by Mary Higgins Clark. I also enjoy books by John Grisham.
Favorite Quotes:
Love all, live well, laugh often! "Thanks, mom" "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
Interests:
I love learning about cultures and people. that's one reason we've enjoyed hosting over 10 exchange student over the past 13 years. We now have "children" all over the world who call us mom and dad. We've had the chance to travel a bit, and I find that extremely interesting too.
Employment History:
Upon receiving my Bachelor's degrees, I taught for 2 years in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a school strictly for disabled students. Since then, I have taught 20 years in the Clark County School district in Las Vegas, NV. I have taught grades K, 1, 3, and 4, as well as adult English to foreigners in our city. I am currently teaching 1st grade, and I love it!
Why Do I Teach?:
I know that I'm helping students learn to believe in themselves, and in their ability to do their best at all times. I cherish every day I have to teach, and I hope they come to cherish every day they learn. I encourage them to learn something new every day, and I share with them what I learn new every day. For some of my students, school is the best part of their day, because they're going home to some pretty scary and dire circumstances. I love being a part of what's "right" in their lives. I want them to have a lifelong love of learning, and I believe I can give them a strong foundation, while helping them discover the strengths that lie within each one of them, even at a young age.
