Port Townsend High School
Hometown:
Chicgo, IL
Class Information:
Room Number: S-6
Students per Class: 8
Class Description:
We are a self-contained life skills class for students with profound disabilities. We have students with more severe cognitive and physical impairments but we also have students who are physically and socially sound but are 4 or more academic grades behind their peers. We do cooking, cleaning, vocational training, public transportation training, academics that are geared towards real-life situations (budgeting, personal finance, shopping. etc.).
Position:
Special Education Teacher
Needs:
The tech in our classroom is outdated and obsolete. There is so much we could do not only in our classroom but in the community with better technology. We want to create a more state-of-the-art website (ours is pretty simple right now) and go out and talk to people in the community about issues we face and then encourage folks to continue the discussion on the website. It would also be great to have the ability to post sound bites, pictures, and videos on our site (after being able to create them in the first place!).
My Philosophy:
Persons with disabilities are our neighbors, our co-workers, our fellow church members, our friends. They want to work, live as independently as possible, and be part of their community; my job is to get them there. I believe that, given training, support, and opportunity, persons with disabilities can be productive members of our communities and dedicated supporters and consumers in their communities also. If we invest in their presents, they will repay us ten-fold with their futures.
