Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a second grade teacher living in Williamsburg, VA and working in Newport News, VA. I always knew I would become a teacher because my mother is a teacher in Fairfax. I grew up grading papers and tutoring not only her students, but my little brother and sister too. I have a two year old son nick named Trey since he's the III (named after my husband who was named after his dad).
College and Degrees:
I have a BS in Elementary Education from Radford University. I am working on my Master's in reading from the University of Virginia.
Activities:
I am currently working on painting the ceiling tiles in my classroom. I have a complete time line finished of famous Americans on the VA SOL test. I have moved on to painting the life cycle of a frog and of a butterfly. I believe many students this age are visual learners so I have visual aids literally from top to bottom in my classroom. I brought Odyssey of the Mind to my school. As head coach, my team took fourth place. I am currently heading an environmental project for grades K-5. I teach Sunday school to 9-12th graders. I am in the process of writing a children's book about a child's first impression of her teacher.
Favorite Books:
Some of my favorite books are children's novels. I believe it's due to the lessons they taught me and the time in which I read them. Some of my favorite books are, Charlotte's Web, The Outsiders, Where the Red Fern Grows, the entire Harry Potter collection, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret, the Castle in the Attic series, the Sarah, Plain and Tall series, A Wrinkle in Time, The Polar Express, the Little House on the Prairie series, Sideways Stories from Wayside School series, and the Superfudge series. As for adult books, I enjoy reading books that tell me what successful people do.
Favorite Quotes:
Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each. -- Plato As a teacher I feel I have a moral obligation to help the children in my classroom grow toward becoming full human beings and to feel successful. Teaching cognitive skills is not enough. -- Jean Medick In a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have. -- Lee Iacocca
Interests:
I am interested in art. I love to draw and paint (hence my ceiling tiles) but my real passion is taking pictures. I use technology in my classroom daily. I love to work on the computer as much as my students do. I also love to read. I read anything I can get my hands on!
Employment History:
I worked for Prince George County for two years, Charles City for one year, Hopewell City for one year, and my husband and I finally bought a home in Williamsburg so I've been teaching in Newport News for five years.
Why Do I Teach?:
I love teaching and I love kids! I want to expose them to their world in a positive way. I want them to enjoy school and have a deep desire to learn new things. As one principal put it, I'm the "Pied Piper of children." Children want to please me by going above and beyond what they learned in school. With the proper technology in my classroom, I'll be able to give them the tools they need to do just that!
