Class Description:
Janet serves as the 21st Century Literacy Coach for Rochelle Middle School, located in the city of Kinston, NC. Janet's literacy program embeds on-site professional development as a best practice into Rochelle's Middle School culture. She coaches all teachers grades 6th, 7th and 8th on the use of research-based literacy strategies within all content areas.

Needs:
Rochelle Middle School serves 595 students grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. Rochelle is located in east Kinston and is the only middle school in the city of Kinston. The population is about 95.5% African American with about 90% free and reduced lunch eligible students. - - We recognize that students need to integrate the use of technology in their day-to-day operations but funds for such initatives are only available through grants such as this.
My Philosophy:
Rochelle's Literacy Leadership Team is committed to providing students with technology to support instruction and monitor students' achievement in all areas pertaining to reading, writing, and vocabulary development. We envision students using technolgy to bring information and experiences into the classroom, thereby overcoming geographical isolation, physical barriers, and economic hardships.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a native of Upstate New York, where I lived and worked for my entire career prior to coming to North Carolina five years ago. - - I have been the literacy coach for Lenoir county for three years. In this capacity, I work with teachers to facilitate their use of research-based best practice in all content area classes. - - I have a deep passion for working with young people and have spent almost two decades identifying and meeting the needs of youth in our public schools.
College and Degrees:
Certificate of Advanced Studies, State University of New York at Cortland. Masterof Science in Special Education, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY. Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, State University of New York at Cortland.
Activities:
I am currently the secretary of the North Carolina's Association for Literacy Coaches. (NCALC)www.nclaconline.org
Favorite Books:
Some of my favorite authors of professional books include: Rosemarye Taylor, Nancie Atwell, Mike Schmoker, Ruth Culham, Karen Bromely and Stephanie Harvey. I have a plethora of other books including gardening and a collection of cook books!

Interests:
When I am not working in my challenging but rewarding profession as Rochelle's Literacy Coach, I enjoy working in my flower garden, reading, and cooking and baking.
Employment History:
I have worked in the Broome County Schools (NY) teaching students in grades kindergarten through eighth. In administration, I have served as a director of special programs. Since coming to North Carolina, I have worked in the Lenoir County Public School system as the Literacy Coach for Rochelle Middle School.
Why Do I Teach?:
I believe I have been touching lives in public schools and beyond for almost two decades now. I chose my current role as literacy coach because true school reform happens with the teachers in the classroom.
