Class Description:
I love science. I love all things about it. Earth, Life, Physical, Biotechnology, if it relates to science, I am interested. I knew if I could find something that could engage the students, they would love science like I do. Okay, maybe they would at least like it. In a world were every primetime TV show has to do with some type of crime scene investigation, I knew that was the hook. I was able to convince administration that this was our new elective. As they say, the rest is history. The class typically consists of juniors and seniors. In the course, we cover the legal system, proper crime processing, fingerprint analysis, hair and fiber analysis, blood and blood spatter analysis, DNA analysis, document forgeries and identification of skeletal remains. Almost every unit we cover includes hands on activities with a crime scene scenario. The students also take part in a mock crime scene where they act as actual crime scene investigators. The students start from beginning to end. They are very involved in the process and they take it very serious. It is very fun for them to try to solve the mystery using all the science skills they have learned.
Position:
Science Instructor
Needs:
The needs we have at the current time would be cameras. The students don't have the photographic equipment to document the crime scenes like they do in real situations. That is a crucial step in the documentation process. It is also important in reviewing evidence during the investigation. There are many times we can't leave the scene up for an extended amount of time. The pictures would be very helpful for the students in analyzing the evidence at a later time.
My Philosophy:
Science is important and many students put up roadblocks to learning it. I believe finding ways to engage them in areas that make sense and are relevant to them is the way to make a lasting impression. Science is always changing and I feel I should too.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am an active mom of 4 year old twin boys. I have a great husband that is amazingly supportive of all my crazy ideas! I love what I do and I wouldn't be able to do any of this without Jesus Christ, who keeps me close by His side.
College and Degrees:
I have a B.S. in Biological Science from Oklahoma State University and I will graduate with an MBA from OSU in May 2009. I obtained my teaching certificate in 2005.
Favorite Books:
I love mysteries, crime novels, suspense, a little science fiction.
Interests:
I love to read, scrapbook, garden, watch my twins play T-ball, visit with friends, watch movies, and listen to music.
Why Do I Teach?:
I believe that I am here to teach "my" kids about the world around us. I am also here to teach them life skills as well. I believe the two go hand in hand. There is so much that can be learned about ourselves and our world and our place in it.
