Alexander Elementary School
Class Information:
Room Number: 202
Students per Class: 45
Class Description:
I teach math in a departmentalized 5th grade. The 5th grade this year has more boys than girls. Our school is one of only 2 in the state of South Carolina that are at 100% poverty level! However, that does not define our students. Our children have risen above their circumstances to surpass any and all expectations! The students in my class are willing to learn but require many different means, from technology, to music, to games, to manipulatives. I try to use all of these plus many more to reach my kids and to teach them math strategies that they can use their entire lives!
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
I would like to have 2 flip cameras in the classroom. My students love to put ideas, strategies, and vocabulary to music that THEY create and I would love to record these performances. It would mean the world for these students to see themselves creating music and applying the math knowledge that they have learned.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy is to try to reach each and every child. If that means letting them rap their math facts, then they rap! If that means letting them draw a diagram to explain an idea, then they draw! If that means using the computer to create a document or visit a website for practice, then the computer it is! I realize that each child learns differently and that the more opportunities they have, the more likely they are to succeed! I want each child to reach their fullest potential!

About Me:
I am in my 4th year of teaching at Alexander Elementary. This school is like a second family to me. These children are not just my students; each year they become my family. I care for them and I am not afraid to let them know that! Teaching is something that I have always wanted to do. It is not always easy and it's definitely not a 7:30-3:00 job, but I would not change it for the world! I am extremely passionate about teaching - it's not just a job, it's who I am! I have a husband who is a music teacher and a 4 year old daughter who loves to "teach" her baby dolls! We are a family of teachers!
College and Degrees:
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Greenville University in 2006. I am continually attending classes to better myself as an educator and applying that knowledge in the classroom.
Activities:
I love reading, being with my family, watching movies, and going to church.
Favorite Books:
Grapes of Wrath, The Shack, Chronicles of Narnia
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I want to make a difference. I love to see the look on a child's face when something "clicks." I mainly teach math and I enjoy incorporating games and technology to get kids excited! I love it when they leave math class excited because they learned something new that will hopefully stay with them the rest of their lives!
