Georgetown Middle School
Hometown:
Georgetown, Kentucky
Class Information:
Students per Class: 20
Class Description:
My classroom is unique in that it was once used as a wash room/supply room at one point. Now the room has been transformed into an entry port into a safe place for high quality learning and top notch fun! My classroom is used for many purposes and for a variety of learning styles. For the first half of the school day, my classroom is used to service special needs students and for the later part of the day, it is used to service the English As Second Language (ESL) learners. In this classroom, hard work and a committment to excellence takes place. With the help of extra resources, my students could excel even more.
Position:
Special Education Teacher
Needs:
My classroom currently has 2 computers for student use that are so old that they still have horizontal modems on which the monitor sits on top off. The computers have frequent trouble saving information to a zip drive. My students are able to access the internet; however, they have difficulty on the majority of the sites because the computers will not download the videos and pictures needed to get the entire effect of the website. My classroom does not have a television nor a VCR or DVD player. I do not have a CD player or any other types of electronic equipment to enhance my lessons. I just recently received an overhead projector to display by daily bellringers and Daily Oral Language. I need technology, as it is proven to enhance and expand the cognitive growth of special needs students as it engages them in direct hands-on activities. I am super proficient in the functions of a Smart Board. WOW...the things I could do with a Smart Board if I had one of my own for my class. Please help!
My Philosophy:
My philosophy in regards to education and learning is that any student is capable of progressing from their current state of cognitive abilities. Teaching the information is my job as a teacher and professional educator and learning is the job of the students. As someone once told me, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink...BUT, you can salt the hay!" To me, this quote explains my entire philosophy as an eductor. You can't make the students learn, but you can make it so interesting that they can't help but to participate. With hands on activities and the access to technology, this goal is completely possible.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am 23 years old and have been teaching special education for 1 and a half years on the middle school level. I also am the head softball coach for the Varsity Softball team at Scott County High School. Ever since I was little, I have had a passion and a hidden talent for teaching. I am able to reflect and transpose information into a langauge that is easy for students to understand. The gift is not something that I have read in a book or learned from a professer. Teachable moments come natural to me...all because I have a passion for teaching.
College and Degrees:
University of the Cumberands- graduated in December 2006: Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Special Education. Minor in English.
Activities:
My entire life I have played fast-pitch softball which has served as the foundation for the organization and drive that I have in my life. Playing sports forced me to prioritize my day to day activities as well as stay focused in the classroom. I knew what it took to be successful. Now years later, I am back hoping to instill those very same qualities into the youth of today.
Favorite Books:
James and the Giant Peach; The Diary of a Work
Favorite Quotes:
"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink; however, you can salt the hay!" Connie Brookins, professor at University of the Cumberlands. "Toughtimes dont' last, tough teams do!"
Employment History:
I am currently the 8th Grade Special Education teacher at Georgetown Middle School in Georgetown, Kentucky, as well as the Varsity Head Softball Coach at Scott County High School. I did my student teaching at both Williamsburg Independent School and Whitley County Middle School in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I have a passion and a gift for teaching. My entire life, I have been overly sensitive to matters in regards to children, more specifically with providing them with opportunities for a positive future. As I became older, I began studying the education of children. I teach because I feel as though I was put on Earth to do this. Everyone has something that they are good at and my gift is teaching.
