My Philosophy:
As a teacher, I am responsible for helping my students develop and refine a specific set of skills: Reading accurately; reading critically; reading insightfully; discussing ideas with confidence and openness; writing fluently; seeking out reliable evidence and using it effectively; and using language with clarity and artistry. However, I also have responsibilities that are far less specific. I am responsible for giving my students chances to look into their hearts, to build aspirations and to question and refine their own views; I am responsible for giving my students opportunities to connect with people in their communities, with those who might inspire them or help them achieve their goals; I am responsible for helping them become learners, people who know how to question and research and how to practice a skill until it turns into an art; I am responsible for helping them learn see questions and problems in the world around them, and for helping them become confident, competent problem-solvers; I am responsible for helping them build their self-esteem in the best sense, by taking themselves seriously, giving credence to their own visions and goals, and taking serious steps to achieve them. My central goal is to create a classroom that prepares students to meet any challenge that the 21st century might hold, while at the same time offering students the same experiences, challenges and connections that have helped adolescents grow and discover themselves since long before the digital age.

I believe in the power of practicing. Currently, the things I practice are mothering, teaching, gardening, yoga and meditation, surfing, drawing, writing, and seeking out grant money. There are lots of other things I'd like to practice but in order to do them I'd have to practice waking up at 4:00 am!
