Half my day is spent teaching children with special needs in inclusive settings, or in regular education preschools. I see 7 children with special needs in this type of setting. These children have less significant delays but are behind developmentally in comparision to their same-age peers.
The other half of my day is spent teaching 6 children in a self-contained classroom, or a separate classroom for children with more significant special needs.
Position:
Early Childhood Special Education Teacher
Needs:
The children I teach have a wide variety of needs. Their delays are in communication, cognition, motor abilities, social skills, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and behavioral management. Some have Autism, Cerebal Palsy, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Failure to Thrive, and general Developmental Delays.
My Philosophy:
Every child can learn. If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.
Personal Information:
Why Do I Teach?:
I love seeing children learn! In Early Childhood Special Education each child is so unique and has very individualized needs. Some children have trouble talking, some can chat away but struggle to walk, and some can run and jump but have trouble regulating their emotions. It's a joy to determine how each child learns best and how to meet those needs. When a child can learn a skill that he will be able to use for the rest of his life, it's amazing!
