Class Description:
I have a mixed class of students with learning disabilities and those who are learning English as a Second Language. I teach Language Arts, Science and Social Studies as an interdisciplinarycourse. Part of how I reach LD and ELL students is through using community based activities and service projects. So far this year my students have surveyed organisms at a local park and published a brochure of their findings as well as volunteering twice a week at the local history museum.
Position:
7th Grade Special Education and ESL
Needs:
We are currently seeking funds to go on a field trip to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Monument offers free palentological and geological programs, but is located 200 miles from our rural Oregon middle school. We are also seeking funds for our Artist in Residence program. A local artist, who spends part of her year as a field scientist, is going to take my class out to observe, draw and create prints of local geologic features.

Why Do I Teach?:
I spent 6 years working with adjuticated youth and adults. I know what happens when students fail to engage in school. Its vital to teach students the social and academic skills to be successful in middle school. Without those interventions, students drop out and get involved in crime in high school. 70% of students in Oregon's state training schools (youth prisons) qualify for special education services. I'm working on implementing and continuing to develop a hands on service learning approach to education so that at risk middle school students stay engaged in school.
