C.A.S.E.S. Elementary
Hometown:
Lake Charles, LA--Home of Katrina 2005
Class Information:
Students per Class: 15
Class Description:
I have the wonderful opportunity to be a special education teacher at a new site called C.A.S.E.S. This academic location will help children that have severe behavior and social issues (anything from bringing weapons or drugs, hurting themselves or others, or behaviors that would result in the child’s suspension from school). These students have behavior so extreme they are unable to function in their regular home school. We plan to work with these children(K-5th) to teach social and behavioral skills, with a concentrated effort on their academic needs. This early intervention, we hope, will prevent the child from continuing these behaviors. These students from thirty-six different schools throughout the parish in grades kindergarten through fifth will now be able to receive individualized help at an early age to change their behavior and make more appropriate choices. It is known the earlier the child gets help with a deficit the easier it is to correct with greater success. I am very excited to teach the academic skills and behavior /social skills each student needs. Our goal is to help the students return to their school and become successful and productive. These students may come with issues of frustration, low-self esteem, anger, poor social skills, ADHD, and lack of motivation. In addition, these children continue to face the challenges that hurricanes Rita and Katrina left behind: increased needs and problems - living conditions, multiple families in one home, family separation, financial difficulties and more. They need a positive, safe, consistent environment. With the use of the digital technology, we can help them make a digital scrapbook of their growth and success. These students of all academic levels can succeed and realize academic and social success. These tools can lead to a smoother transition back to respective schools. Our Purpose is to: 1. Create an enhanced technology environment that captures student participation, and higher levels of academic / social success. 2. Have teachers to reach all academic areas in the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum through hands-on teaching verses the overload of worksheets and drills. 3. Offer immediate feedback of accuracy to student. 4. Provide opportunities for teachers to develop lessons from the student on environment and actively envloved. C.A.S.E.Sdesired results from this type of classroom environment will be that the teacher has more opportunity to act as the role of facilitator, and students have the opportunity to be an active participator, invested team player, and a self-manager / motivator. With accurate and immediate feedback students will be given instant gratification which will help students stay on task with less behavioral problems, offer a higher rate of retention, desire to improve, and more self confidence as they make the transition back to their home base school. We as a faculty desire students at C.A.S.E.S to have more intrinsic motivation, self control with their behavior, and a decrease in absenteeism. Through this innovative high tech teaching environment we will provide “Roots to grow and Wings to Fly”.

About Me:
I have taught more than fifteen years in classes such as: Emotional Disturbed, Behavior Disordered, Autistic, Resource, and Inclusion Classes in Public and Hospital facilities levels Pre-Kindergarten to Twelve Grade, This year I moved to a new alternative site that is starting from the ground up, physically and conceptually. Our school site is the remains of an old elementary school that is gutted out. Our school board is renovating it, but we have a long way to go. It has been difficult to afford furnishing and basic supplies. Although we will receive the basics, we would love to have technology and software that is so very necessary in today’s world and children’s futures.

Why Do I Teach?:
I love to see the growth in each individual child. They are unique and I have to be organized with procedures and most of all very flexable. Everyday is a different adventure for the child and myself.
