Create a book trailer instead of the traditional book talk or book report.

1. Have the students write 5 interesting statements about the plot or characters that will hook the potential reader into the story they read.
2. Select images from a computer or video tape 5 short clips (10 seconds each) that correlate to the engaging statements from step one.
3. The last text will not be a statement but a provocative question that will leave the viewer and potential reader wanting more e.g. Will Katness ever see her family again? (be careful not to give away the ending of the book).
4. Upload the images and type the short statements into the free website Animoto.com
( I recommend the first image to be the cover of the book and the last image to be a credit page but that is optional. If you use a credit page, I used a powerpoint slide as a jpg and it saved it as an image just like a picture.)
5. Your students will then be asked to select the music to accompany the video, images, and text. Animoto has over 1000 songs and multiple genres to choose from or you can upload your own music.
6. The last step is to click finalize and after a few minutes each student will have their own 30 second video book trailer.
Comments
For videos longer than 30 seconds you can buy a subscription but when I worked with an intensive reading high school class using this lesson plan I found 30 seconds ample time for each book. I encouraged students to help each other using the strategy "ask three before me".
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
You could use this website Animoto.com with any lesson or concept you want to present.
Follow-Up
View the book trailers with the class all at once or put them on the morning show one per day, to promote literacy at your school.
