School: Bayou Chicot High School, Ville Platte, LA
Planned By: Amy Andrus
Original Author: Amy Andrus, Ville Platte
We will spend the first nine weeks of school studying The Stories Julian Tells. The teacher will use the SMARTboard and laptop to access Learnzillion.com and introduce students to the activities they will be completing. The teacher will read aloud one chapter of the book each week. The students will partner read the chapter as well. Finally, students will independently read the chapter. Students will use iPads to access graphic organizers on Learnzillion.com. They will use information from the book to complete graphic organizers that relate to character traits, how character's actions affect a story, how chapters build on one another to create a story, and the central message of the story. They will also write in response to the text on a daily basis. Writing will be submitted to the teacher using iPads, Chromebooks, and/or laptops. Students have the option to work on these activities independently, with a partner, or with a collaborative group. The teacher will closely monitor all completed activities to gauge the level of student understanding and assist individual students as needed. As a culminating activity, students will write an essay to demonstrate their understanding of the text. The essay prompt will be: What is a central message that is conveyed through Julian, Huey, and Father's actions in The Stories Julian Tells?
Comments
I currently have 10 iPads and 1 laptop that students are able to use. I am hoping to get 10 Chromebooks and 2 more laptops so that every student can have access to a device. Another reason I am asking for a variety of technology is so that each student has the choice of technology that he or she feels most comfortable with.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The Stories Julian Tells can relate to Science, as well as to ELA. There are several chapters about a garden and planting trees. Students can plant a seed at the same time you begin reading the book and document the care and growth of the plant. They can relate this real life experience to the character's experience of planting and growing seeds.
Follow-Up
At the conclusion of the unit, students will take a test that assesses the standards taught. The test will be formatted based on LEAP 2025 released test items. It will include both multiple-choice items and constructed response items.
