Name of Lesson -- Coardboard Boat Race

Objective(s)
1. Students will complete a 7 step design process on building a cardboard boat.
2. Students will design on Autodesk Inventor (3-D solid modeling software package) their boat design.
3. Students will gather for themselves all required materials to construct their boat.
4. Students will Students will construct cardboard boat.
5. Students will race their boat at our school pool (Both teammates must be in the boat during race.
6. During the entire process, students are required to video (if we get the flip video cameras) to whole process.
7. Students will take their recorded video and create a digital portfolio of the entire cardboat process.
8. Students will learn how to caculate the following prior to placing their boat in the water;
a. Total cubic feet in the boat
b. How much weight the boat will hold before totally sinking
c. How many inches the boat will sink when it is placed in the water and the two temamates get in it.
d. How many cubic feet of water will be displaced once the boat is placed in the water and the two teammates get in it.
9. Students will present their boat building process to the class in a Powerpoint format.
10. Students must complete a budget upon completion of project

Guidelines:
1. Maximum boat size == 8 feet long X 30 inched wide X 30 inches tall.
2. Cardboard only (not wax coated). Students are required to visit local industries/businesses in order to get cardboard (Must be part if video). No flotation assistance allowed.
3. 5 tubes of liquid nail max.
4. 2 rols of duct tape max.
5. Maximum budget per team $ 25.00.
6. Maximum time to complete the entire process is 10 full class (1.5 hrs. each) periods.
7. Students must wear life jackets while in the water (furnished by instructor).
8. Instructor reserves the right to critique to boat to determine if the boat will be allowed to compete in the race. decision is based on cosmetic appearance, construction, durability and safety.
9. Students will receive 10 points extra on the project is they upload digital portfolio to facebook, you-tube, personal website etc.
10. NOTE -- Local newspapers, parents/community and TV stations will be invited to view the actual race.


Comments
By receiving the flip video cameras, I'll be able to take it to the next level by allowing the students to show their work on their personal website/face book etc. By doing so I believe it will brign more ownership to the students regarding their work.

Follow-Up
Upon completion, the class will review each design in order to critique work and give feedback. Also, there will be a test given to cover the math, science and physics.
