Pre-K 4 Lesson Plan for Steam Stations using 6 Cubelet Blocks

Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to discuss and compare James Dean’s Robo-Pete children’s book to Cubelets Robot Blocks.

Students will be able to explain what parts make up a flashlight and compare items that are transparent or opaque.

Students will be able to identify coding with directions to move on game board.

Transitional Movement Activity:

First have the children listen and move to the song “I Am A Robot Interactive song for kids” by Kymberly Stewart.

1. Have the students sit on the carpet and read the story: Pete the Cat Series: Robo-Pete Written By, James Dean (See Youtube Video Example...) https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&p=pete+the+cat+robo+pete#id=2&vid=40c556b688141fd8f50308bd4a6a457b&action=click

2. After reading the story, have a discussion about robots. Ask open ended questions about what they think a robot is & where might they have seen one. What robots are in their homes? Or what technology might they consider being “A Robot”? Examples: Alexa, Google Home, Siri, and iHome Vacuum. All these items use advanced technology to allow them to work. Technology is something that solves a real world problem…

Hypnosis: 6 Cubelets Cubes are then shown to the children.
Questions to ask:
Ask the children what they look like?
Have they seen them before?
What might the the Cubelets Cube do?
Do they work alone?
Can they have to be connected like..Legos or Connecting Blocks?
What might they build?
Discuss that Cubelets Cubes have 3 types: 1. Sense blocks (What are your senses? See, Touch, Hear….), 2. Action blocks (What things can you do? Run, Jump, Throw…), 3. Think blocks (Humm... What do you use to think? Brain)

3. Have the children break up into 4 stations:

At Teacher Station #1, the children will be using Cubelets Cube and Cards to build a functioning Cubelets Cube activity. Each labeled card will have a diagram demonstrating what is to be built; such as, a flashlight and sensory moving wheels. After the Cubelets Cubes are put together, the children will circle on the card the function the Cubelets Cubes completed. Legos will be provided for expanding the student’s robot.

b. At Independent Station #2, the children will be creating a robot out of geometric construction shapes such as in the story Robo-Pete when Pete the Cat built in his home. Children will cut out the given shapes (paper with triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, and glue them to construction paper.

c. At Independent Station #3, the children will be giving a dollar store flashlight. The children will be able to take apart and put batteries back in the flashlight and close up the end. Students are then allowed to experiment with the flashlight. Examples: Looking at picture books, Lighting up see thru geometric shapes.

d. At Teacher Station #4, the children will play a coding game on the Smart Board. Children will be given a deck of arrow flashcards. The objective is to take turns and move the in the direction of the arrow on the card from start to finish. The game board based is on the the book Robo-Pete by James Dean.

In Conclusion: Have the students return to the carpet to assess and summarize the robot lesson.
