Hawfield Middle School
Hometown:
Burlington, North carolina
Class Information:
Students per Class: 630
Class Description:
I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade art classes. I have children of all academic and socioeconomic levels in every class. My children are wonderful and they learn best by hands-on experiences and exploration. My kids LOVE art and they LOVE science!
Position:
Art Teacher
Needs:
We need better technology for our art room. Tools like a microscope and camera which attaches to it will allow us to study our universe at the atomic level and record it with photography, making abstract art. We need software to take these photographs and manipulate to enhance the beauty of the world discovered through the camera's lens. We need the accessories, such as the media card , to make this equipment functional.
My Philosophy:
I can teach everything in the world through Visual Art. That is why every art lesson I teach is integrated seemlessly with core subject areas. Every child learns best through experiencial learning and in the art room, that is what we do best! Using technology to create art "kicks it up a notch" , to quote Emeril, engaging the students further in their learning. I love my job, I love my kids and I love learning WITH my kids!
Personal Information:
About Me:
I came to teaching as a second career. I had started college right after high school, but didn't finish. I got married, had a baby and worked in a bank. My husband encouraged me to return to schoool to what I loved : ART. I graduated at 30 years old with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts (BFA) and at 37 years old, I earned my Master's Degree in Art Education (MAEd). Every day I go to work and I am filled with new ideas for projects my students and I can explore together. Often times my husband, Fred, and my 2 children, Spencer (14) and Caitlyn(7), help me test new ideas, offer suggestions and support me in the ocation of teaching art. I am truly blessed to have a job which allows me to be creative, help children and one to which I love to get up for every morning!
College and Degrees:
University of North Carolina at Greensboro- BFA East Carolina University- MFA Nationally Board Certified- NBCT
Activities:
reading, painting, drawing, hiking, hanging out with my family
Favorite Books:
I love to read historical fiction, fanstasy and science fiction, as well as any art history book...then again, I just love to read! My most recent favorite books include The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfeld and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.
Favorite Quotes:
“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.” Leonardo da Vinci "Imaginationis more important than knowledge." Albert Einstein "Live out of your imagination, not your history." Stephen Covey
Interests:
I am fascinated by all kinds of art ( which is a good thing for an art teacher!) and as an adult, I have become fascinated with science, as well. Science is the foundation of life itself; art is the potential of life itself. I am also very interested in technology, as it applies to art. Digital photography, digital animation, computer graphics keep drawing me into the world of computers and keeps me learning. I guess you could say that my interests are in learning, becausse there is just SO MUCH to learn!
Employment History:
How far back do I go for my employment history? Hmm...i worked in fast food during high school and college. I worked in a dance and funk band for a year, then I worked in a bank for several years. After I graduated with my BFA in 1999, I started working for my current employer, the Alamance-BurlingtonSchool System in North Carolina as a teacher. In that role I taught elementary art for 5 years, 1 year of high school art (parttime) and I am in my 4th year as a middle school art teacher.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I love art, I love kids and, honestly, it may sound silly, but teaching "completes me". I am a better person when I teach. I am a better person BECAUSE I teach. If I didn't teach, then I wouldn't be me.
