Keywords: Newspaper, publication, photography, language arts, layout, editing
Subject(s): Math, English/Language Arts, Technology, Social Skills, Journalism, Photography
Grades K through 8
School: Holy Rosary School, Evansville, IN
Planned By: Trisha Smith
Original Author: Trisha Smith, Evansville
The students will begin by holding a staff meeting. An editor will be assigned and writing / photography assignments will be given. Students will work on completing these assignments outside of classtime and must meet their deadline.
When students complete their assignments they will learn how to format a newspaper. Students will have to align photographs with captions and clip art to make visually appealing layouts and use tools to edit their work. Some students will be responsible for the printing and distributing of the newspaper.
Because I work with multiple classes (K-8) a variety of classes could participate with the publication of the ram-gram. A great way to teach the younger students is to have multi-grade level publications that could pair the K-4 students, or 2-6 students. This could help the older students work on their leadership skills while assisting the class.
Along with the language arts/computer aspect of this lesson, some financial aspects could be included by pre-selling the publication to students for a nominal fee. (Could help off-set paper or ink cost.) A treasury committee could be formed to sell subscriptions to the newspaper and advertisers could be sought to add to the experience.
Comments
This would be an on-going project that could continue for many years. I would love to see it a permanent fixture for our students.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
UNLIMITED! This project could pull in every single member of our faculty in some way.
Follow-Up
Each week this project could grow and be adjusted. I would love to see students gain more and more control of this over time and have permanent positions such as sports editor, copy editor, print manager, and photographers.
