A group of ten students will be selected throughout the grades to be designanted school photographers. Optimally, two per grade. The students will be brought together to be taught and gain some experience with taking digital pictures. Initially, they will be instructed on the basic functionalities of the camera and its settings. They will understand how the memory cards work. They will also be instructed on how to upload their photos into a computer and edit them using a photo software. The initial meeting will consist of an exploratory session where the students will take pictures and learn how to delete unwanted images. They will then be asked to carry the cameras around with them throughout their day. I will discuss the importance of not allowing the cameras to become a distraction from classroom assignments.
The students should take pictures that they feel represent the school as a whole. Photographs should include faculty and staff as well as the community. Students will be asked to try to take the unexpected pictures, and not focus on posed photography.
After a week of picture taking, the students will come together in the classroom and we will focus on uploading our images to the computer. The importance of quality pictures will be discussed in this second lesson. The students should understand that they are creating a year book of the best pictures.
The students will also learn how to oranize their photos into seperate folders that are categorized for ease of reference.
This is a year long project where the students will publish a yearbook as a culminating activity.
