Grades 7 through 8

Planned By: David Andrews
Original Author: David Andrews, Butler
Students start by researching selected invasive species in their area. Information to be included: origin, appearance, effect on native species, control measures, and other important biological information. After compiling this background information, students work together to develop a newsletter for residents of the community to inform about invasive species in the area. This helps to prevent the further spread of undesireable species throughout the environment. Species I have used in my area include Japanese knotweed, zebra mussels, purple loosestrife, and round gobies. Other helpful information could be gathering photos of these plants in your areas, and documentation of where they already are established.
