First graders will get to know their school community well by photographing important places, people, and events at our school.
Before taking any pictures, we will take a 'field trip' and thoroughly explore the school, keeping notes on all the people, places, and events we see. We will then brainstorm, matching what we saw with each letter of the alphabet. Small groups will be given a few letters and a photo assignment. They will take some pictures of their assigned letter(s), download the pictures, and write a caption. This will take adult assistance.
Once the picture and caption are complete, the students will add a cartoon character of themselves(created in a paint/drawing program) in each photo they took. This is similiar to a technique used in the beloved Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems, which will use as a mentor text to help guide us with how our ABC book will look(B/W photos with cartoon characters added).
These will be assembled as a book, bound and shared in the classroom and schoolwide library. The slideshow could run at Open House night or during school wide events.
