The students will create an interactive scrapbook documenting life as a first grader. This process will take place in increments that increase in difficulty throughout the year. At the beginning of the year, the teacher will take pictures, using a digital camera, of the students participating in various activities. Using the TOOL FACTORY PAINTER, the students will add borders and clip art to their pictures. Then the students will write 3 sentences about the picture using TOOL FACTORY Word Processor. As the year progresses, the students will begin to take their own pictures. Pictures will consist of students working with manipulatives, field trips, special class activities, and participating in special areas. After each page is completed, it will be printed for the students which will be compiled into a book at the end of the year. The students will have the opportunity to add embellishments to the printed pages.
At the end of the year, the students will create their own scrapbook on the computer using TOOL FACTORY SLIDE SHOW. The students will be required to have a title page and table of contents. When the scrapbook is complete, the students will present their scrapbooks to the class. The printed pages will be bound to create a scrapbook for each student to take home at the end of the year.
This activity complies with standards in all areas of the curriculum. The students are writing, which requires the practice of sight words, phonemic awareness, punctuation, and complete sentences. This activity also incorporates what they experienced and learned in science, social studies, and math. Character education is also enforced when the students write about their friends.
