PROCEDURES
Day 1
On a KWL chart ask the students what they know about illustrations. Have them describe items, techniques, tools, uses, produces etc. Make a list of the dialogue and comments. Discuss how illustrations can enhance a person’s message or story. See if the students know different types of illustrations for different types of texts. This would be a great opportunity to pull in texts that show different illustration types as well as discuss award winning illustration. Some options would be (dependant on the season)
• What Presidents are made of by Hanoch Piven
• The Judge by Harve Zemach
• Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault
• Hedgie’s Surprise by Jan Brett
• The Polar Express by Chris van Allsburg

After discussing what makes illustrations unique use this time to lay out the assignment to the students. The students will make an ABC illustration book. This will be a collaborative effort to cover all 26 letters of the alphabet. They will be using the digital camera to collect their illustrations. Then copying and pasting them to a Power Point presentation were they will be typing in their captions. The students will have to find objects, things, people, etc around the school that makes Ellsworth Elementary special.

Brainstorm options for certain letters. Examples- P is for Principal. Our principal makes our school Positively FUN! C is for Class Pets. Many teachers have funny looking class pets. Also discuss proper handling and usage of the digital camera. Discuss proper use of Power Point program. Assign the students a second Grade partner to help them focus and use the camera and to help them type and spell their captions.

DAY 2
Begin by grouping partners and assigning them a letter of the alphabet. (Some groups will be giving 2 letters). Hand out the cameras and have the students search the school for their special object. Allow for 10 minutes. Each group will take their camera and take 2 pictures of their object. When they return they will need to write down what their letter, picture and caption is. And then it needs to be compared to the other groups so there are no repeats. Those groups that finish early can begin to type their caption on the lap top. And the pictures need to be transferred to the lap top.

DAY 3
Any group who has not finished typing or copying their picture into their power point will have the time to finish today.

DAY 4
Have a group of partners or 2 work on combining the different Power Point pages into a single presentation. You can even delegate a “Spell Check’ group. A “Slide Transition group”. A “Director” group who will run the project during the projection slide show. ETC. This will depend on your students’ ability and their skills. Simple is elegant too. This can be a lengthy activity. Have deep you want to go is up to you. With Second Grade Helpers we are able to make pretty neat pages.

DAY 5
Take time the day before to review the students’ finished product. Make adjustments if necessary. Today is show time. Invite in other classrooms if appropriate. (Show during parent teacher conferences. Or even at an awards assembly). Have the partnered groups narrate their individual pages as the slide show is shown- if appropriate.

EXTENSIONS
Have your students write a story about each picture.
Make them use adjectives that begin with the same letter as their noun as well.
Have the students do an illustration of their digital picture using oil paints, watercolors, markers, etc.
Have them review last years Power Point projects
Have them reflect on their experience of partner work
