Keywords: pictures, adjectives, writing, learning disabilities
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Photography, Special Needs
Grade P-K
School: Ralph Downs Elementary School, Oklahoma City, OK
Planned By: Angela Kwok
Original Author: Angela Kwok, Oklahoma City
Each student takes a picture of the weather, downloads and prints the image and writes about the picture in a descriptive writing piece. The purpose of the activity is to expose students to the writing process, write with a specific purpose/targe audience, and write using complete sentences and punctuation. Students will be highly encouraged to incorporate a variety of adjectives within their writing to keep the writing interesting. The pictures will be uploaded to the computer and sent electronically to a local news station with a typed paragraph explaining the photograph (where the images was taken, what is in the picture, what lies outside the picture, etc). If selected, the students work will be featured on the evening newscast. I will use this lesson with a small learning disabilities class to encourage their interest in writing, and provide an opportunity for students to write with a specific purpose in mind. The value of this project is that students choose the image and they write about the image based on their own expertise or experience.
