Keywords: Photo Journalism, Book Making, Creative Writing
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Art, Technology, Journalism, Photography
Grades 3 through 8
School: Donegan Elementary School, Bethlehem, PA
Planned By: Myra Stoudt
Original Author: Myra Stoudt, Bethlehem
Selected students (rotation will give the experience to all) will be the "class eyes" to record ten photos on a given day regarding experiences/experiments/discoveries/excursions our class has. These will be whatever that student deems interesting or noteworthy.

Once a week these photos will be downloaded from all cameras onto a class site where all students will select one or two photos to use as inspiration for memoir writing.

Rough writing will be peer revised, edited and worked into a formal writing piece and assessed with a writing rubric with a photo-relativity addendum. (Page layout choices will be explored and designed by each student).

These pieces will be combined into a class Joint Memoir of the Growth of a Class whose lay-out and sorting will be done by the students with only assistance from the teacher.

Comments
Today's students are picture-sensitive. In order to pull words from reluctant writers or expressors, pictures hold great power. For sts to see themselves as picture creators, more ownership is attached to their writing. For the very pictures to be about themselves and their private world of school-day learning, connection to the memoir genre and investiment is guaranteed.
