Using digital cameras, Picture Perfect Math students take pictures of objects within their school that represent math terms. For example, a picture of a bookcase could represent a rectangle, or a picture of a butterfly could show symmetry. Students arrange their pictures within an electronic slide show to create a Math Picture Dictionary. This dictionary will be showcased on the school’s website. Students will also scan photos to replicate pictures for a pictorial graph representation of collected data.

For the Claymation project, students take a series of pictures to act out the steps necessary to solve a problem or recreate a real-life scenario using math (such as making a purchase in the grocery store). Students import photos into iMovie, then add titles and descriptions and display their mini movie to the rest of the class.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
By creating dictionaries, writing scripts, and planning storyboards, students are also enhancing their communication arts skills.
