Day 1-
Continue discussion of communities and how they develop based on their specific needs.

Identify learning objective-Developing a second grae survey to share with their peers, teachers and Principal. The survey will be utilized to inform future school decisions. It will also be shared with the school technology committee and the district technology committee.

Define the word survey, using a smartboard and projector. Underline key terms and phrase in several definitions including Webster's online dictionary.

Examine and analyze two online school survey's.

Brainstorm key areas where the second grade students think we should collect data.

Day 2-Review Objective.

Examine brainstored list and prioritize the top five categories for questions.

Examine a Likert Scale on the SmartBoard.

Divide students into groups of 3 to develop statements for category 1 (classroom).Type their statements onto an AlphaSmart.

Students come back to a large group. Connect each group's AlphaSmart to the laptop to view on the SmartBoard. As a group, look for similarities in statements. Combine them and prioritize the top 5 or 6 statements.

Days 3 & 4 -Repeat the process for the rest of the categories: work/homework, cafeteria/recess, library/specials and technology.

Day 5-Students pre-test a sample survey for editing purposes. As a large group develop a list (SmartBoard) of directions and procedures for administering the survey. Students assign themselves to another class to administer the survey.

The GT teacher prints copies for all second grade students.

Day 6-The Gt students pick-up the surveys and directins. They go to a second grade class that is not thier homeroom. They deliver the instructions and administer the survey in a 30 minute period.

Day 7-The teacher and students use the SmartBoard and the Jids' Zone-Create a Graph webpage to analyze the data. We look at pie graphs and bar graphs. We determine that the bar graphs are easier to read. We input our data for each question and look for the questions with significant results (over .5).

We discuss our findings and what they might want to share with their classmates and teachers. We send the data by e-mail to their teachers and our Principal.

Reflection includes questions:
Why did we do this project?
What do you think might happen as a result of our project?
What would we change if we tried this project again?
Comments
This lesson took a grade level theme and it evolved into an authentic learning experience for the students. They could identify real life applications for this project.
