Subject(s): Social Studies, Technology
Grades 3 through 4
School: North Branch Elementary School, N Branch, MI
Planned By: Kerry Rose
Original Author: Kerry Rose, N Branch
This lesson plan will consist of 4th grade students taking digital photos of K-4 students and staff throughout the elementary. The idea is for the photos to capture moments where staff and/or students are following the Core Democratic Values.

4th grade students will be placed in groups and assigned a different Core Democratic Value to look for. If students spot someone exemplifying their Core Democratic Value, they will take a picture. Once photos are taken, 4th grade students will upload them into PowerPoint where they will be used to create individual slides explaining the Core Democratic Value displayed. Next, 4th grade students will create a personal narration for the slides in order to create a story that younger children can listen to.

The purpose of this activity is to not only actively involve and motivate 4th grade students into learning digital photography, but to also make learning more meaningful. By using Core Democratic Values as the basis of the activity, students will be integrating their social studies curriculum with the technology component. Completed digital stories will be shared with younger students to help them understand the difficult concepts presented by Core Democratic Values.
