What are tags? Use del.icio.us to tag resources. (Tag names are separated by spaces. You can use uppercase, but del.icio.us ignores it.) Discuss why "education" is too broad a topic and should include at least one more tag topic. Click on the "education" tag and show how del.icio.us brings up a list of related tags (tags that were used in addition to education) that allow you to zero in on a discrete set of webpages.

Use http://del.icio.us/tag/KASmiddle to find all pages tagged as KASmiddle. Use http://del.icio.us/tag/medical dictionary to find all pages tagged both medical and dictionary. Del.icio.us is a social networking capabilities.

When on a public computer and you want to save tags, logon to the del.icio.us account, then go to http://del.icio.us/post/ .

How to tag books and create your own library collection on LibraryThing

Discuss how to assign a subject heading to a book, and how we might organize a physical library based on subject.

Discuss how much more flexibility there is in a virtual library like LibraryThing.

Create LibraryThing accounts and share that data. Using LibraryThing helps you find more of the kind of books that you like. This webapp will enable you to be their own librarian and this more than anything else will help you build and sustain an interest in reading.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
You can use these tools to organize a group of research websites for any type of curriculum you are teaching.
