Keywords: digital storytelling, family
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Art, Technology
Grades K through 2
School: Chain O Lakes Elem School, Waupaca, WI
Planned By: Heidi Pence
Original Author: Heidi Pence, Waupaca
Day 1: Explain to your students about the digital story that they will be creating. Have the students decide who they would like to write about. Have them write 1,2, or 3 things about this person thinking about what they like to do with them, how or why this person is special to them. If students need help writing their sentences or ideas to get started, assist them as needed. On the first day the teacher should send home a note telling about the project that their child is working on. The note should have a blank where the persons name can be written by the student. The note should include the request for pictures of that person to be brought to school by the student in the next few days and returned home safely after scanning.

Day 2: Students will use a program such as Kid Pix or Pixie 2 to create a painted picture of themselves and the person they have chosen. One of the sentences should be typed in a text box on the page. An example of this first page could be, "This is me and my Uncle Jeff. He takes me fishing." If the student finishes with this page then it can be saved and they can work on the second page. The second page can be a sentence about why this person is special to them. An example might be," Uncle Jeff is a great man. He listens to me."
On this day, students that have brought in pictures of the person that they love, can begin scanning them into the computer. Have them save to a file to later be inserted by the student on their second or third slide. Transfer this file to a flash drive or to the network for easy access for inserting.

Day 3: Continue with the second or third slide and also with the scanning of pictures. Begin helping students to insert pictures that have been scanned by them into their 2nd and 3rd slides. The third slide can say something very simple such as," I love my Uncle Jeff and he loves me." or if your students have written more about that person, this would be the slide to put it on.

Day 4: Finish slides adding details or backgrounds. Students that would like to add themselves reading their sentences can record their voices. Any students that need to scan pictures or insert them should do so.

Have the students put together the slides in order to complete the project. Save as a digital story for possible export to a website, podcast or family night project that can be displayed at school.
Comments
This project can be spread out over a few weeks. If you have a person that a student loves living far away, they can use snail mail or email to send you pictures of themselves. This makes a great Valentine's Day project.
Follow-Up
I would post the students projects on the school or class website or podcast them if possible. It might also be nice to invite the family members in to view the projects that the students have made.
