Keywords: Developing Informatiive Documentaries for Morning News Broadcast
Subject(s): Journalism
Grades 7 through 8
School: Digital Wish, Manchester Center, VT
Planned By: Digital Wish Support
Original Author: Digital Wish Support, Sunderland
Objective: Students will learn to orginate, script, storyboard, film, edit and produce a two minute documentary for broadcast on our Morning Announcements show. The documentary will be in line with the students' assignment franchise topic: Global Citizens, Web News, Health, Peer Influences, Making the Grade- Educational help, Happenings- Positive stories of success on campus.

Materials: Students will use a planning packet for putting together plans and group assignments, as well as to storyboard and precisely produce the documentary. Equipment needs: Digital cameras, camcorders, voice dubbing and editing equipment, laptops with imovie, iphoto and imusic software, on-line music selections.

Week One: Education and Planning. Introduce franchise sub-topics and post subjects as decided on by students, on the walls. Group students with multi-talents and levels in mind. Five person groups. Present Power Points on how to plan and produce a video. Quiz students, requiring that they pass at 75% in order to start a project.

Week Two: Packet completion and intial footage. Students will complete a planning packet and get teacher sign-off before any equipment is issued. Students will have assignments and work in 40 minute modules with updates on goals due at the end of each class. At the end of week one, students will present their rough footage to the teacher with open class discussion about content, understandability, and future direction noted by the group. The group will submit a retooled story board which will list/catalog each piece of footage. A script for voice dubbing must also be submitted.
Week Three: Students will work together to compile their documentary using programs available on their powerbook laptops. They will need to get a sign off from senior producers, producers, and finally, the teacher, before loading the final product to the Morning Broadcast hardrive.

Week Four- Students will undergo thourough review and make changes to their approach for their next video for their franchise. Students will take an exam and as well as be required to fill out self awareness/assessment surveys in order to proceed to the next video. Students will have to clearly identify what they now know, what they need to improve on, and what they need to learn to increase future output.
Comments
The outcome will create a somewhat timeless library of public service announcements to be used year after year.
