Keywords: Self Portraits
Subject(s): Art, Technology, Photography
Grades 6 through 8
School: Pike County Middle School, Zebulon, GA
Planned By: Mike Thompson
Original Author: Mike Thompson, Zebulon
The teacher will introduce the lesson by showing students self portraits by famous artists. Artists from Michelangelo to Andy Warhol will be discussed so students can observe the integration of technology in self portraits. The students will select a pose that best illustrates their personality. The students may wear sunglasses, ball caps, anything that helps to show their true inner self. The students will print their digital self portraits and use an opaque projector to enlarge image. The students will then trace portraits and select one color to use in their portraits. The students will create light and dark values by mixing black and white paint with selected color. These images will make an awesome display for any school!
Comments
This activity will allow my students to work with new technologies that will benefit them in high school and help to prepare them for college. Kids love using technology and this activity not only helps to help increase their technology skills, but allows them an avenue for self discovery as well.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Working with the technology dept. to create interesting pictures for the school newsletter and yearbook.
Follow-Up
Have students take digital portraits of everyday people that make an impact on their lives. Encourage students to capture photos of people they feel make the biggest impact on their lives and write a short poem about their photo.
