Benchmark II-A/I-C Standard II Students will understand how physical, natural and cultural processes influence where people live, the ways in which people live, and how societies interact with one another. Students will identify and use the mapping tools of scale, compass rose, grid, symbols, and mental mapping to locate and draw places on maps and globes. Students will identify and describe similar historical characteristics of the U.S. and its neighboring countries. Students will identify and compare components that create a community in teh U.S. and its neighboring countries.
Objective: Students will construct a map of their community using digital photos of various places and land features in the area.
Procedures: 1. Briainstorm sites adn geographical features in the community that could be used in photos. 2. Compile a list of sites to photograph. 3. Use digital camaras to photograph sites and features selected. 4. Students will work as a group to create a community map locating each feature and site. 5. Students will label the map with a compass rose, and symbols within a map key. 6. Display the community map for parent night.
Evaluation: Observation and participation of each student. Final project for parent night display.
Equipment needed: Digital Camaras Large paper for map
