Students begin this lesson brainstorming a class list of technology in their lives. Each student will write an essay about several important technologies in their life. They will type it on the computer and print it out for our final presentation. I will ask students (if they haven't suggested it) if a pencil or comb or other simple items are technology; leading to a definition that technology is anything made to make life easier or better. We will discuss technology and science and how they are related.

Then students will be introduced to the digital cameras and learn how to use them including taking portraits with controlled lighting. They will practice taking portraits on each other.

Students will write up interview questions to ask their older generation person. I will check questions. Teams will figure out a rotation schedule to use the camera for their interviews. They will also practise uploading images into the computer and printing them for their presentation.

Final interviews will be typed as well and printed.

Complete projects will be presented to the class. For this presentation we will hold an openhouse after sending invitations to all of the interviewed people.

Students will have one final written assessment explaining what technology is to them based on this experience. They will include a prediction of what role technology will play in their future.
Comments
Students often think that computers equal technology. This lesson will help them realize the vastness of technology. It will also help them realize the creative nature of technology develeopment and how it is similar to science and uses science in order to create new technology.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson is science and technology primarily. But language arts and social studies are key components also for it to be done fully. In addition student work with teams and older people will help develop character education.
Follow-Up
This unit is usually done prior to my 8th grade students forming design teams who work with materials to develop automated toys.
Materials: Yearbook, Digital Voice Recorders
