The students in my 6th grade Life Science class are placed into teams and each team is assigned a particular organelle of the cell to research. Using word processing software, they have to prepare a one page advertisement for the organelle listing the function, structure and location of the organelle - creativity counts - we've had B1G1 sales, free with purchase, and discount coupons on our flyers. They next have to write a three to five minute infomercial for their organelle which we film using FLIP video cameras. We show the commercials in class and then have the children vote anonymously and we award CELLIES for the silliest, most creative, most professional, etc commercials.
Comments
The kids loved this activity - they actually asked to spend recess and lunch time working on their commercials!
Follow-Up
I showed the commercials to the 5th grade as a pesentation when we did their cell unit.
