Keywords: Robotics
Subject(s): Technology, Service Learning, Science, Physics
Grades 9 through 12
School: Chaminade College Prep School, Chatsworth, CA
Planned By: Nancy McIntyre
Original Author: Nancy McIntyre, Chatsworth
The high school robotics students will host a teacher training workshop featuring sessions on system engineering, strategy development, mind mapping, how to build a drive system, how to work with arms and lifts, pneumatics, team building, programming, and how to incorporate CAD into the classroom. The strength of the workshop comes from students who will be making the presentations. One of the best ways to learn something new is to teach it. The students will produce all of the materials and give the different sessions. The students will prepare for the workshops by practicing on each other in class and at our after school sessions.
The students will be divided into sub-teams with each of the different topics being selected or assigned as needed. The students will prepare an outline of the material to be covered. The students will research their individual topics and prepare handouts, PowerPoint presentations and hands on opportunities for the teacher participants.
The workshop will take place on a Saturday and the teachers from the greater Los Angeles area will be invited to participate. If we are able to secure funding for the teachers to be able to take the robots back to their schools we will order the kits and give them away at the conclusion of the workshop. If no funding is available we will loan our kits out for the teachers to work with during the workshop.
Comments
The students learn so much more than just the specifics of robotics. They learn teamwork, confidence, how to give an oral presentation, research skills, use of PowerPoint, use of Mind mapping software, and programming software
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students have to write, practice speaking to a group, a brain storming technique called mindmapping which all can be used in all subject areas.
Follow-Up
If we are successful we will invite the teachers back to our school with their students for a friendly competition. Students will need to learn all of the jobs necessary for a competition from setting up the field to scorekeeping, resetting the field to taking the field down at the conclusion of the event.
