Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Photography
Grades 6 through 8
School: Danby Rush Tower Middle School, Festus, MO
Planned By: Jerrianne Wallace
Original Author: Jerrianne Wallace, Festus
Students will study in the classroom various animals native to our region. They will compile an "anticipation sheet" with a checklist of the animals/fish/insects they expect to find on our visit to the pond. Students will create a "Pond booklet" that includes their checklist of pond life, and blank pages for insertion of illustrations once they arrive at the pond. Teachers will take digital photos of the students on their journey (on the wooden bridge, leaning over the dock) and students will take digital photos of the life they find in the pond region. We will print the photos and post them on the bulletin board outside our room, for all to see!

Once back in class, we can research our findings to find the scientific names of the animals we found at the pond, and their atypical biome. Students can write a journal entry of their discoveries.
Comments
Students LOVE to see themselves in print - posting their pictures on a bulletin board will elicit conversation about their field trip as long as those pictures are posted!
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Other teachers can participate/supervise this field trip by introducing assignments on this topic in their classrooms. This one is especially good for many subjects!
Follow-Up
Seasonal - different animals at the pond at different times of the year.
