Keywords: Math video project
Subject(s): Calculus, Algebra, Geometry, Math, Trigonometry
Grades 9 through 12
School: Bureau Valley High School, Manlius, IL
Planned By: Julie Decker-Platz
Original Author: Julie Decker-Platz, Manlius
Discussion item: students are forever asking "when are we ever going to use this in the real world". Instead of bringing in 30 different speakers from the real world to educate them to the reality that math is everywhere, students will educate themselves by videoing and interviewing someone in the real world (with their permission) that uses math on a daily basis.

Activity: students will check out flip cameras on a rotating basis and find a parent, family friend, neighbor, etc. for their interview/video assignment. Over the course of 4 weeks all students will complete this project as well as a personal reflection explaining whether their original assumptions about math in the real world have been changed or not. As a class we will choose an assortment of video/interviews and create a 'documentary' of sorts that could be put on the school's website or shown at an assembly.

Comments
I think the students would love and out-of-the-box math assignment. They might think it would be hard to find someone using math at first, but they would soon figure out that everyone uses math whether they are cooking, painting or running a cash register.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This could be used in conjunction with our media department and the students could add different kinds of background music or animated characters to their final project.
Follow-Up
I would love the chance to show clips from the final project every time someone ask "when are we going to use this".
