Planned By: Signe Balluff
Original Author: Signe Balluff, N Salt Lake
Objectives (Utah State Core):

Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom. (3, 4)

Describe how and why humans have changed the physical environment of Utah to meet their needs (e.g. reservoirs, irrigation, climate, transportation systems and cities

Discuss the different types of landforms and environmental environment in Utah. Engage students in predicting and inferring physical environment changes that may occur in the future. Question why these predictions may be accurate or inaccurate.

Discuss the reasons for past physical changes.

In groups of two or three have students take pictures of changes in the physical environment. If possible let them take digital cameras home overnight to take pictures of changes.

After gathering photos have students write a script for their podcast. The podcast should include the changes they have recorded and reasons for the changes. Students should also make predictions about future changes to these same places.

Students may use the photos to create a powerpoint to go with the podcast, or create a video podcast using both the pictures and audio.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Writing skills--included in the script writing.
Follow-Up
Invite an environmental specialist to speak to the class about changes happening in the physical environment. Or-find someone who works constructing reservoirs or works for the Transportation Department to discuss history and future plans in the industry.
