Objectives
1.03.1 Discuss appropriate use and care of all types of resources (print, non-print, hardware, software, electronic).
1.03.2 Model and use ways to locate information resources (e.g., automated circulation system, NC WISE OWL)
1.03.3 Media coordinator/classroom teachers identify, discuss, and model when and how to use various resources (atlas, almanac, online resources, hardware, software) throughout the year.
1.04.4 Media coordinators/classroom teachers routinely model and discuss the importance of intellectual property and crediting all types of sources.
1.09.2 Compile a bibliography of appropriate resources on a specific subject. Identify fact/fiction

1. Demonstration of Pocket PC memoes and notes functions to take notes on factual information for a research project.
2. Demonstration of memoes/notes function to store citation information for bibliography.
3. Demonstration of Pocket PC PowerPoint to storyboard a final multimedia project.
4. Demonstration of record function to make verbal notes for project or to use with interviews.
5. Demonstration of Pocket PC Excel to record observations and numerical data

Students will brainstrorm the projects they are going to work on. Inspiration may be used for the brainstorming process. An essential Question will be set as the Main idea. Students will download the outline from the map to the Pocket PC. Notes will be added to the outline as research progresses.

PowerPoint can be used be used to story board out the steps of the research project. The plan will be downloaded to the Pocket PC for reference through out the progress of the project.

If Excel is to be used, spreadsheets set up for data will be downloaded to the Pocket PCs for data collection throughout the resrach phae of the project.

Notes will be added to the outline as students access a variety of print and digital resources for research.
Data will be recorded to spreadsheets on the Pocket PC as the research progresses.

After a set period of time for research and data collection, the outline and or spreadsheets will be uploaded to a laptop or desktop to write draft of written report, create charts of data collected, organize bibliography from citations recorded in notes, audio recordings that may be part of multimedia product.
Comments
Five Pocket PCs will be enough for a small team of researchers. The Pocket PCs may be used for 1-2 weeks at a time by each team. The Pocket PCs will be kept in the library for check out by students on research teams.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
the pocket PCs can be shared by members of a team. The notes, data collection, audio recordings may be done by different students depending on the project. A project can be a clooaborative effort between teachers in different disciplines. The Pocket Pc can be shared as a central collection point for notes, data, audio recordings that are all relevant to the final product.
Follow-Up
Multimedia product of the research, podcasts of the research or final analysis of data, charts of data with interpretations and final conclusions. All results andproducts could be published to the school website or intranet for review by peers.
